Fatal accident inquiry into death of dad killed in truck and lorry crash

A fatal accident inquiry is to open into the death of a dad killed in a collision between a truck and a lorry in the Borders. Colin Elliot, from Cumnock, was pronounced dead following the collision on the A1 near Eyemouth shortly after 3.15am on Thursday, January 19, 2023. Officers shut down the road for almost 12 hours while an investigation into the incident took place.

His family, through a Police Scotland statement last year said: "We are all deeply saddened by the passing of Colin Elliot. "Colin was a much loved husband, father, step-father, son and brother. "He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him and had the pleasure of being in his company."

The purpose of a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) includes determining the cause of death; the circumstances in which the deaths occurred, and to establish what, if any, reasonable precautions could have been taken, and could be implemented in the future, to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.

Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are inquisitorial in nature, and are used to establish facts rather than to apportion blame.

The inquiry is to be held within Jedburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.
