Driver ‘rushing to get to Ikea’ caught doing 117mph on foggy motorway

A driver who was apparently desperate to get to Ikea for the sales was caught doing 117mph amid foggy conditions on the M60, according to police. A police patrol spotted a red Audi speeding along the motorway at Stockport[1]. The car was eventually pulled over in nearby Tameside[2] where the driver told officers he was 'rushing to get to Ikea'.

The Swedish flat pack furniture retailer, which has a huge store just off the M60 in Ashton[3] under Lyne, has a sale until January 12 with 60 per cent reductions on some items. But the trip to the Swedish homeware giant looks like it could prove more expensive than the driver expected -as he will now have to attend court 'to explain his actions'. North West Motorway Police, which covers Greater Manchester and surrounding areas, tweeted about the incident today (Friday, December 27) including an image of the Audi after it had been pulled over.

From its account on X, the police wrote: "Driver of this Audi was sighted by GMP motorway patrol on M60[4] at Stockport driving at 117mph in extremely poor visibility due to fog. "Driver stated he was rushing to get to IKEA. Not a good enough or valid reason.

He will now have his day in Court to explain his actions." Earlier, the account had warned motorists that 'fog in parts of the region that is causing some visibility problems'.

While fog continues to cause issues on the roads, the Met Office has delivered its verdict on the chances of snow in the coming days. Temperatures will stay around 7C across the north west and the fog and mist set to continue.

Forecasters from the Met Office have issued warnings that 'severe snow' could sweep across parts of the UK next week, with a sharp drop in temperatures on the horizon. Following a relatively mild Christmas[5] period, a colder snap is predicted to make its presence felt before the arrival of the new year, bringing with it potential snowfall in some regions. For the coming days, the Met Office forecasts continued cloudy and mild weather[6] for the UK.

Towards the end of the week, rain is expected to affect areas of Scotland and Northern Ireland, while the far northwest should brace for brighter yet cooler weather, reports the Manchester Evening News[7].
