Delivery lorry crashes into building and closes thermal spa

An 18th-century pillar at Thermae Bath Spa was hit and damaged by a reversing delivery lorry this morning, Wednesday, December 4. The spa has announced that it is closed today while barriers and a cordon surround the entrance while the damage is assessed. The lorry has caused significant damage to one of the historic columns that support the entrance to the spa.

The area around the damaged pillar is littered with rubble and dust from the crash. Thermae Bath Spa has closed for the day, informing clients via social media that the y have made the decision to close due to 'unforeseen circumstances', reports Somerset Live[1]. There are currently no reports of injuries and while it appears the structural integrity of the building and pillar is not at risk, the spa has said customer and staff safety is their utmost concern.

A spokesperson from Thermae Bath Spa has commented on the matter saying: "This morning at 7:30am a delivery lorry unexpectedly reversed into one of the 18th century columns, being one of the six columns supporting the colonnade to the entrance of Thermae Bath Spa."

Continuing, they noted: "The safety of our customers and our staff is our first priority and therefore, regrettably, we have taken the decision to close whilst structural engineers and experts assess the damage to the column and advise when we can reopen."
