Smith & Sons saddle up new Volvo FMX tippers
Smith & Sons (Bletchington) in Oxford has returned to Volvo Trucks for a new batch of FMX tippers, impressed by the fuel efficiency of similar models they received in 2022.
The latest delivery from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East includes three FMX 420 8×4 and two FMX 330 6×4 trucks, all with Charlton SuperLite bodywork.
Fleet manager Paul Needle said: “We opted for Volvo two years ago due to its reputation for reliability and driving performance. Not only has the FMX delivered on those promises, but it has also yielded impressive fuel efficiency.”
He added the FMX has significantly outperformed other brands in fuel efficiency, saving the company money.
Built for tough conditions, the FMX is perfect for Smith & Sons’ work delivering sand, gravel and stone from their Oxfordshire quarries to customer sites. The trucks feature Volvo’s X-High chassis for extra ground clearance.
The 8×4 models are powered by D13K engines producing 420 bhp and 2100 Nm of torque, while the 6x4s have D11K engines with 330 bhp and 1600 Nm. Both come with a 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission.
The FMX cabs include heated, suspended seats, a 12-inch digital display with navigation, and DAB radio. Safety features include Forward Collision Warning, emergency braking and Side Collision Avoidance Support.
With this order, 13 of the company’s 38 trucks are now Volvos, all covered by Volvo Gold Contracts for cost control and maximum uptime.
Each vehicle will cover up to 75,000 km annually and stay in service for up to eight years.
