M2 diversion route today after serious lorry crash
Drivers on the M2 are being diverted this morning (November 21) following a serious crash between a lorry and a pedestrian. The collision happened on the eastbound carriageway, which has now been closed for several hours[1], between J5 for the A249 and Sittingbourne[2], and J6 for Faversham[3]. All traffic within the closure has been released but a diversion has been put in place. Kent Police[4] have said the closure will remain until midday today while specialist investigation and clear-up work is carried out.
Diversion route
People hoping to use the M2 eastbound are being advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs:
- Exit the M2 eastbound at J5 and take the third exit at the roundabout onto the A249 southbound towards Maidstone[5];
- Travel southbound on the A249 for approximately five miles to reach the M20[6] J7 and take the first exit at the roundabout onto the M20 eastbound;
- Leave the M20 eastbound at J8 and take the third exit at the roundabout, followed by the first exit at the next roundabout to join the A20 eastbound towards Lenham;
- Continue on the A20[7] for around nine miles, passing through Harrietsham and Lenham, to reach the roundabout with the A252 at Charing;
- Take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A252 eastbound towards Challock;
- Remain on the A252 to the next roundabout (with the A251) and take the first exit onto the A251 northbound towards Faversham;
- Continue on the A251 northbound for approximately six miles and re-join the M2 at J6.
Motorists are advised to allow extra journey time.
A National Highways spokesperson added: “Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
