Live: M49 closed after serious crash amid gridlock around Bristol

There is gridlock around Bristol this evening with a series of crashes causing long delays. Drivers trying to leave Bristol this evening (November 28) are facing long delays - as the M49 is closed northbound after a serious collision on the M49 near Severn Beach It comes as, on the other side of Bristol, there are long delays on the A4 Portway due to a multi-vehicle crash.

Traffic monitoring site, Inrix, has reported: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M49 Northbound near M4 J22. In the roadworks area. Held around 18.00."]

And National Highways South-West have posted on X (formerly Twitter), writing: "The M49 is closed northbound between the M5 and the M4 J22 due to a serious collision. Emergency services and Traffic Officers are on scene. Please allow extra journey time if in the area.

Traffic is being diverted via the M5 northbound to J16, and M4 westbound to J22." AA Traffic News is reporting delays of around 15 minutes, as of 6.25pm, with delays only increasing as traffic continues to be held. The incident is also impacting drivers travelling on the M4 Eastbound in Gloucestershire, where there is currently an average speed of just 35mph.

National Highways said: "The M49 in Gloucestershire is closed northbound between the M5 (J18) and the M4 (J22) due to a serious collision. Emergency services are in attendance including Avon and Somerset Police. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.

"Road users are advised to continue on the M5 northbound to J16 and join the M4 westbound and travel to J22 to continue your journey.
