Drivers of these 59 cars face £2,000 in car tax from April

Drivers of swanky and high-performance motors might have to ease off the accelerator, as they’re set for a major vehicle excise duty hike. A fresh list unveils 59 gas-guzzling models that will get slapped with a GBP2,000 road tax rise from April 2025; cars emitting more than 255g/km of CO2 will be hit hardest by the increase. Meanwhile, standard road tax rates will only see a minor bump in line with inflation.

Come April 2025, any new car purchase exceeding 75g per kilometre in CO2 emissions could land buyers with an exorbitant road tax bill. It’s the first-year rate where drivers will feel the biggest pinch – those in the top emission bands may witness rates doubling. These hefty tax measures are aimed at bagging GBP400m in the next financial year, with expectations to rake in an eye-watering GBP1.7bn for the government’s coffers by 2030.

Yet, zero-emission vehicle owners might just see a silver lining, as budget briefings signal potential leniency: “The government recognises the disproportionate impact of the current VED Expensive Car Supplement threshold for those purchasing zero-emission cars and will consider raising the threshold for zero-emission cars only at a future fiscal event, to make it easier to buy electric cars.”

Check out the vehicles in line for the lofty first-year road tax in the higher CO2 band detailed below, reports the Daily Record[1].
