Major disruption after lorry and cyclist crash

Shortly before 7.35am, emergency services were called to the roundabout at Tower Road and Birkenhead Road to reports of a collision involving a HGV truck and a cyclist. Emergency services including Merseyside Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and North West Ambulance Service are currently dealing with the incident and the cyclist is currently being treated for serious injuries. The driver of the HGV stopped at the scene and is helping police with their enquiries. 

Road closures are in place around Tower Road, Birkenhead Road, Dock Road and Duke Street while emergency services attend the incident. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area and find an alternative route while emergency services deal with the incident. Traffic and travel system, INRIX, states: “A554 both ways closed, heavy traffic due to police incident from A5139 Dock Road to the A5029.

Congestion to Dock street and Duke street as traffic diverts. Tower wharf is also closed.” Police are appealing for any witnesses, CCTV and dash camera footage which may assist their investigation.

Chief Inspector Phil Thompson said: “We have now launched an investigation into the collision and would urge anyone who witnessed the incident, or has CCTV and dashcam footage to please contact us.  “Every piece information is vitally important to our investigation to establish what happened. “Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact SCIU on (0151) 777 5747, or email [email protected][1] quoting log 123 of 29 October.

“Alternatively DM @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.” A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire crews were called to a Road Traffic Collision (RTC) this morning on Tower Road, Seacombe , with two fire engines and the Search and Rescue Team in attendance. “Crews were alerted at 7.43am and on scene at 7.51am.

“Crews provided support to Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance colleagues at the scene.”
