M61 LIVE updates: Stretch of motorway fully shut with police on scene
A stretch of the M61 motorway is shut after a man died in a crash last night. The smash happened on the southbound side of the motorway near to Rivington Services at around 11.40pm on Tuesday evening (October 15). Police said a Citreon C1 car hit a barrier, before then colliding with a Mercedes on the carriageway.
The man – who was a passenger in the Citreon – was sadly pronounced dead on the scene. The driver and another passenger in the car were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The Mercedes driver was also left seriously hurt.
Accident investigation work has been ongoing at the scene through the early hours and throughout the day today. The southbound stretch of the M61 remains shut from junction eight for Chorley to junction six for Horwich. A diversion route has been put in place.
