Freeport police on scene of standoff near Hosmer Apartments

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) – People in Freeport are asked to avoid the area of Hosmer Apartments, 601 N. Walnut Ave., due to a police situation involving a barricaded individual.

As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the situation is at a standstill.

Rob Boyer, Freeport City Manager, says it’s important community members stay away from closed off areas and give police space to work.

Freeport police say the situation has been ongoing for several hours at the high-rise apartment complex.

“Our officers responded to the scene Wednesday morning and have been working with the community to ensure safety for all,” said Freeport Police Chief Chris Shenberger. “An individual was reported as shooting a firearm and our trained professionals are now working to completely eradicate the scene of potential for harm.”

According to police at the scene, shots were fired from a rifle. Those living in the area have been advised to evacuate. A barricaded zone near the scene has been expanded to keep people safe.

City leaders ask the public to stay away from closed off areas and allow officers to do their jobs.

The Salvation Army of Freeport is opening its doors to residents unable to return to their homes due to the situation. Anyone with questions is asked to call 815-235-7639. Pretzel City Area Transit is helping with transportation.

It will remain open overnight from Wednesday to Thursday because of the unique circumstances.

Due to the situation, the Stephenson County Health Department says appointments planned for Wednesday will need to be rescheduled.

People can reschedule their appointments by calling 815-235-8271.
