Father-of-five dies following NI crash as lorry driver arrested

The 40-year-old was a father-of-five from the Donagh area.

The incident occurred in the Crom Road area of Lisnaskea on Wednesday evening and involved a car and a lorry.

Police said the driver of the lorry, a 48-year-old man, has subsequently been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody at this time.

The road remains closed and motorists have been asked to seek an alternative route.

A death notice for Mr Lavelle said he was the beloved son of Michael and Mary, dearly loved husband of Eilish, and loving father to Jacob, Michaela, Laoise, Cliodhna and Domhnall Og.

He was also a dear brother of Emmet, Michael, Michelle, Barry, Majella, Maria and Emma.

Roads Inspector Cherith Adair from the PSNI’s Collision Investigation Unit said: “Police received a report at approximately 5.30pm of a collision involving a lorry and car on the Crom Road.

“Officers attended, alongside our colleagues from other emergency services. Sadly, the driver of the car, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“He was married father-of-five, Daniel Lavelle, who was aged 40, and from the Donagh area.

“My detectives are investigating the circumstances of the collision, and would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam or other footage which could assist with our enquiries.

Sinn Fein MLA Aine Murphy expressed her condolences to the family.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said: “It is absolutely heart-breaking news to learn of the tragic death of Daniel Lavelle following a road traffic collision on the Crom Road on Wednesday evening.

“My immediate thoughts and prayers are with his wife Eilish, their five children, extended family and friends at this very sad and difficult time.

“In what will be very emotional days and weeks ahead I know the local community will rally around to support Daniel’s grieving family.

“I want to pay tribute to the emergency services for all of their efforts at the scene.”
