Elderly woman killed in lorry collision in Co Donegal as Gardai seek witnesses
Another life has been tragically lost in a road accident in Co Donegal. The death of a woman in her 80s in the incident in the village of St Johnston this afternoon marks the latest fatality on the county’s roads in the past week. This collision brings the total number of fatalities in the county to four, between last Saturday night and today.
The most recent tragedy occurred this afternoon at 2pm on Church Street. It is believed that the incident involved a lorry and a pedestrian. The woman was a local resident.
The community is reeling from the shock of the tragedy, with visible distress among many of the woman’s neighbours and friends in the close-knit village. The woman’s death takes the total number of people killed on Donegal’s roads so far this year to twelve – two more than the entirety of last year. The week of devastation began last Saturday night at 11.15pm when two cousins were involved in a single vehicle collision at Cross, Quigley’s Point, reports the Irish Mirror[3].
The front seat passenger in the car, sixteen year old Kian Dawson, died at the scene. His cousin Eoghan, aged 20, was rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for treatment of critical injuries sustained in the crash. Sadly, Eoghan passed away on Tuesday.
A two-vehicle collision last Sunday morning at Inver in south Donegal resulted in an 87 year old woman being rushed to Sligo University Hospital with serious injuries. Ms Elizabeth Cave, a popular figure in Donegal Town, has sadly passed away from injuries sustained during an accident, for which an Austrian man has been charged with dangerous driving. Gardai statement confirmed, “Shortly after 2 p.m., Gardai and emergency services were alerted after a woman in her 80s was struck by a lorry on Church Street in the village.”
Tragically, “She was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later. The Coroner has been notified, and her body will be taken to the mortuary at Letterkenny Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted. The lorry driver was uninjured.”
A Garda spokesperson disclosed that, “The road is currently closed to facilitate an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, and local diversions are in place. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has also been notified.” Authorities are requesting witnesses to step forward.
Information echoed was, “Any road users who have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were in the vicinity of St. Johnston at the time of the collision are asked to make this footage available to the investigating Gardai.” Finally, “Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station on 074 916 7100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
