Drivers will be paying £122 under new diesel and petrol rule from October
A driving expert has issued a warning that the new Labour[1] government’s decision to scrap fuel duty could hit motorists’ wallets hard, with potentially an extra GBP122 in costs each year. Set to come into effect after Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Autumn Budget and fiscal announcement, the change is raising concerns among drivers. Tim Rodie from Motorpoint highlighted the financial burden for drivers saying: “With the average driver already spending close to GBP180 a month on fuel, it’s no surprise that the prospect of further price increases has been met with apprehension.”
He explained: “While the fuel duty cut introduced in 2022 was only ever a temporary measure, anything that puts additional financial pressure on motorists is going to be largely unpopular.” Get daily headlines and breaking news emailed to you – it’s FREE[3] Moreover, he informed that Motorpoint has calculated that drivers will end up paying around GBP2.35 more every time they fill up their vehicle.
Under the new rules, he pointed out, drivers who make a weekly trip to the pump would see themselves shelling out an extra GBP122 annually, or those topping up monthly would have to budget for an additional GBP28. For individuals refilling biweekly, the change equates to a GBP57 rise, reports Birmingham Live[4]. Rodie also added a note on speeding highlighting its financial impact: “Speeding won’t just leave you at risk of a fine and points on your licence, but it’s terrible for fuel economy.
Research has shown that sticking to the speed limit on the motorway can increase fuel efficiency by up to 25 per cent compared with driving at 80mph.” “So, to save fuel, it’s a good idea to stick within the speed limit and try to drive at a consistent speed as much as possible.” He also advised: “Over time, we all pick up bad habits, but driving like you did when you took your test can really help with fuel efficiency.”
“For example, no matter how desperate you are to get to your destination, accelerating too quickly will waste fuel and won’t do much for your arrival time.”
