Diesel users could face extra £122 in costs amid fuel duty change

A decision by the new Labour[1] government to scrap fuel duty, which is set to come into effect after Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Autumn Budget and fiscal announcement, has raised concerns with motorists, particularly those with diesel vehicles. And now a driving expert has warned drivers that the decision could see extra costs of around GBP122 each year. Tim Rodie from Motorpoint highlighted the costs and the effect it could have on motorists, saying: “With the average driver already spending close to GBP180 a month on fuel, it’s no surprise that the prospect of further price increases has been met with apprehension.”

He went on to explain: “While the fuel duty cut introduced in 2022 was only ever a temporary measure, anything that puts additional financial pressure on motorists is going to be largely unpopular.” He also commented that Motorpoint has calculated that drivers will pay around GBP2.35 more every time they fill up their vehicle, because of the decision, Coventry Live reports.[2]

He pointed out that, under the new rules, drivers who make a weekly trip to the pump would see themselves paying an extra GBP122 annually, or those topping up monthly would have to budget for an additional GBP28. Birmingham Live[5] reports that for individuals refilling biweekly, the change equates to a GBP57 rise. Rodie also commented on speeding and the financial impact associated with it, saying: “Speeding won’t just leave you at risk of a fine and points on your licence, but it’s terrible for fuel economy.

Research has shown that sticking to the speed limit on the motorway can increase fuel efficiency by up to 25 per cent compared with driving at 80mph.”

“So, to save fuel, it’s a good idea to stick within the speed limit and try to drive at a consistent speed as much as possible.” He also advised: “Over time, we all pick up bad habits, but driving like you did when you took your test can really help with fuel efficiency.

For example, no matter how desperate you are to get to your destination, accelerating too quickly will waste fuel and won’t do much for your arrival time.”
