Car on M4 completely destroyed in fire

This was the scene after a car was completely destroyed in a fire on the M4 overnight. Fire crews and police officers were called to the scene of the fire on the Severn Bridge around 11pm. The M4 eastbound was closed by police between junction 23 and 22.

The motorway was closed for over four hours while firefighters extinguished the blaze and an enquires were carried out, as BristolLive reports.[1] Just after midnight, National Highways confirmed the car fire was extinguished, but an inspection of the motorway was ongoing. It said: “The #M4 eastbound remains closed between J23 and J22 @2Severn Bridges following a car fire.

Carriageway inspection is ongoing.” Pictures shared today show the extent of the damage to the car following the fire. It appears as the engine has been almost completely destroyed, with much of the exterior badly damaged too.

The motorway was reopened around 3.35am today, National Highways confirmed.

It said: “All lanes are now open on the #M4 eastbound between J23 and J22 Severn Crossing following an earlier car fire.”

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

It is not thought that anyone was injured in the fire. Avon Fire and Rescue[2] has been contacted for further information.
