Teen, 18, dies in M74 crash involving HGV lorry after reports of man ‘walking on motorway’

An 18-year-old man has died following a collision involving an HGV lorry on the M74. motorway. The incident happened in the early hours of this morning (Saturday, August 3) around 3.10am, near junction six, Hamilton[1], on the southbound carriageway. Police[2] received a report of a man walking on the motorway around the time.

A short time later, they received a further report of a man being struck by a vehicle. The 18-year-old involved was pronounced dead at the scene. As reported on Glasgow Live[5], the motorway was closed in both directions and the southbound route remained shut until after 1pm today, with motorists[6] asked to avoid the area as tailbacks ensued.

Police say enquiries into the Lanarkshire[7] incident are ongoing as witnesses in the area at the time are asked to come forward. Sergeant John Houston said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the 18-year-old man, as well as everyone else affected by this tragic incident. “We working to establish the full circumstances and would urge anyone who may have information to come forward.
