Police issue plea to stranded drivers after crash shut major road

People were urged not to get out of their cars as they waited on a for a major road to reopen after a serious accident. The A449 was closed in both directions in Monmouthshire after a crash on Saturday afternoon. At 4pm, the southbound carriageway was re-opened but northbound remains closed, lane closures remained in place for a number hours and traffic was stationary for several hours at the scene.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “For safety reasons, please can all those affected stay inside their vehicles whilst officers work to resolve the incident.

Emergency vehicle will commuting to the incident using both northbound and southbound carriageways.”

The road was closed from the M4 junction 24 at Coldra to Usk.
