M74 collision sparks motorway closures in both directions as police warn drivers to avoid scene
A collision in the early hours of Saturday morning has sparked major road closures on the M74 motorway. The incident, reported just after 3am, happened near Hamilton junction 6, and caused the carriageway to close in both directions. Further details of the collision are not yet known but police have asked drivers to avoid the area if possible, with motorists reporting being ‘stuck’ in traffic[1] earlier this morning.
The northbound carriageway has since reopened but the southbound remains closed as of 10.15am, according to Police Scotland[4] and Traffic Scotland, and signed diversions are in place. The latest update from police reads: “The M74 is currently closed near at J6 southbound near Hamilton[5] due to a collision which was reported around 3.10am. “The northbound carriageway was closed but has since fully reopened.
“We would ask southbound traffic to avoid the area and use alternative routes.” More information to follow on this story as soon as we have it. Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here[6] to receive news and features direct to your inbox
