M6 shut ‘for some time’ after tragic fatal collision with air ambulance called

The M6 remained closed throughout the day on Thursday (August 15) after a tragic fatal collision. The motorway in Cumbria will continue to be closed 'for some time' after the major crash, that involved one vehicle, Cumbria Police said. The collision, which closed the northbound carriageway from around 11am, involved one vehicle.

North West Ambulance crews and the fire service were also called to the scene. The crash was reported between junction 36 for Kirkby Lonsdale and junction 38 for Tebay. Police later confirmed a fatality in the incident, but no further details have been given at this stage.

At one stage traffic was also brought to a standstill southbound to allow Great North Air Ambulance to land. There were 'severe delays' in the area throughout the afternoon, with traffic monitoring service Inrix reporting congestion through Kendal as drivers avoided the closure area. Cumbria Police said in an update given at just before 5.20pm: "The M6 northbound remains closed between junctions 36 and 38 this afternoon following a fatal road traffic collision involving a single vehicle earlier this today (15 August).

"The northbound carriageway is likely to remain closed for some time whilst police and partners continue their work at the scene of the incident, which occurred at around 11am."

Drivers were advised to plan alternative routes if possible.

A diversion was put in place via the A590 up to Kendal, before rejoining the M6 at junction 39.
