Huge emergency services response including police helicopter after three car crash shuts major road

There was a huge emergency services response as a major road was closed following a three-vehicle crash tonight (Sunday). Bury[1] New Road in Prestwich[2] was cordoned off following the smash, said to involve a Ford Transit van and two cars. The police helicopter was also deployed following the collision at around 8.30pm. One witness said she counted 25 police cars rushing to the scene, while another described an ‘insane’ amount of emergency vehicles.

Pictures from the scene show debris strewn across the road, including a traffic light which had been knocked over. A white Hyundai and badly damaged black car can also been seen within the cordon. An onlooker said: “It looks nasty.

It looks like a van has hit a car that was pulling out of Tesco[4]. “The door of the van has been ripped off and is wrapped round a lamppost.

“There’s loads of police here and the helicopter was out for about half an hour. The road’s closed in both ways from the motorway roundabout.

“It’s causing loads of traffic problems.”

Greater Manchester Police[5] have been contacted for a comment.
