Hero off-duty nurse battles to save woman struck by lorry outside Morrisons

A hero off-duty nurse battled to save a female pedestrian who was seriously injured after being struck by a lorry outside a supermarket. An air ambulance was sent to the scene[1] close to Morrisons in Christchurch Way, Stone, this afternoon (August 27). Paramedics found by-standers providing first aid to the woman who was then taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital’s major trauma unit.

Her condition was last described a ‘serious’. The one-way system remains closed between Radford Street and Lichfield Street this evening as a police investigation gets underway. One eye-witness said: “I was a few cars behind when it happened.

Just saw loads of shopping go flying then screams. Looked like a poor woman had been hit by a small lorry/truck. It was by the blind spot on the bend.

Traffic was slow moving at the time. Just hope she’s ok.” A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We received multiple 999 calls to reports of an RTC involving a pedestrian and a lorry on Christchurch Way, Stone.

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford with a BASICS doctor and paramedic on board attended the scene. “When ambulance staff arrived on scene, they found bystanders and an off-duty nurse providing first aid to a pedestrian, a woman, who had been involved in a collision with a lorry. The woman, who was in a serious condition, received advanced trauma care from ambulance clinicians to stabilise her injuries before being conveyed by land ambulance on blue lights to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further specialist trauma care.”

A Staffordshire Police[2] spokesman said: “Christchurch Way in Stone is currently closed while emergency services attend a serious incident. Drivers are urged to take alternative routes. We thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.”
