Discover the UK’s stunning answer to Positano with Mediterranean vibes
You might mistake the above image for a classic Mediterranean[1] hideaway. Glimpsed here is the golden arch of sand, the sunlight dancing on the azure seas, and an uninterrupted expanse of blue skyit could easily pass for Italy’s famed Amalfi coast[2], complete with quaintly painted boats swaying in the harbour. Yet, this isn’t one of the globe’s iconic coastlines; instead, this hidden gem is Viking Bay.
It’s a haven for beach lovers and sun worshippers, surrounded by inviting pubs and delightful restaurants[3]. Kent proudly offers its own picturesque slice reminiscent of Positano’s allure. Toast to the Italian vistas as you enjoy a refreshing “ice cold Birra Moretti” under the brightly hued parasols at the lively Viking Bay Cafe, immersing yourself in this enchanting seaside niche, reports the Express[4].

The much-loved bay in Thanet captivates those who seek sands; even during high tide, there’s plenty of shore to revel in, bounded by a charming promenade and a quaint tidal pool.
On Tripadvisor, it has garnered acclaim, boasting an impressive 4.5-star rating from nearly 1,000 reviews, according to Kent Live. One enthusiastic visitor couldn’t help but rave about their experience last year, saying: “Absolutely wonderful beach cafe and bar situated on stunning Viking Bay and close to the lift. It has plenty of tables complete with parasols.
They serve amazing freshly cooked food and have a great selection of bar drinks including ice cold Birra Moretti, Beaverton Neck Oil and Fosters – all on draught.” “The burgers here are probably the best I’ve ever had and they even do ‘skin-on fries’ here which are always favourite. There’s also really nice whippy ice cream and loads of other ices and lollys and treats.”
Adding to Viking Bay’s allure is The Pavillion bar and restaurant, known for its inclusive menu that caters to vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free diets. On TripAdvisor, The Pavillion holds a commendable four out of five stars, with reviewer Stephen declaring: “We had been to the pavilion the previous day and were so impressed that we came back for lunch. A lovely location.
The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. Service was very good. Highly recommended.”
Broadstairs was once home to the Michelin-starred restaurant, Stark, which has regrettably shut its doors. Visitors driving in can find parking at two spacious car parks near the bay, both reasonably priced. A highlight of the area is the recently renovated GBP17,000 beach lift.
Operated by Thanet District Council, it swoops guests from the clifftop down to the sands, revealing a breathtaking view of Viking Bay. The public conveniences are accessible year-round, but they’ve garnered some negative feedback due to being unclean and smelly. For those keen on exploring, the charming town of Broadstairs is a mere half-mile stroll away, boasting an array of shops and a diverse range of eateries.
Time Out has lauded Broadstairs for its stunning chalk cliff backdrop, numerous pubs with sea views, and a vibrant food scene, making it an ideal destination for day-trippers and city folk seeking a weekend getaway. Moreover, Broadstairs is home to seven sandy bays, perfect for a full day of beach-hopping adventures. Kingsgate Bay is particularly noteworthy, with its grand former castle perched atop the headlands, a natural chalk ‘window’, rock pools, and safe swimming spots.
A visitor who recently enjoyed Viking Bay recommended getting there early in peak season to avoid the midday crowds, adding: “This is hands down my favourite part of the Kent coast. The beach is large, sandy and clean. People just seem happy.”
“We walked all along the beach eating ice cream and enjoying the sea air. Be aware though that it can get very busy, so plan to get there as early as you can as finding a parking space can get tricky. But it’s worth the effort and is surrounded by lovely places to eat and shops to peruse.
Or just eat ice cream and watch the world go by!”
