Young Ryanair pilot who died in devastating M62 lorry crash pictured

The Ryanair pilot who tragically lost his life in a horrific M62[1] crash has been pictured for the first time. Senior First Officer Jamie Fernandes, aged 24, was a former pupil at Bolton School. He and Captain Matt Greenhalgh, 28, were en-route to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in a taxi when the fatal collision occurred at 5.31am on yesterday (July 11).

The devastating incident, which took place on the westbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 7, involved their taxi and two HGVs. Both pilots were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Cheshire Police have confirmed that specialist officers are supporting the families of the deceased, reports the Liverpool Echo[2].

The taxi driver sustained serious injuries in the crash and is currently receiving treatment in hospital as of today, July 12. Meanwhile, a 61-year-old man, the driver of one of the lorries, has been taken into custody under suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. According Jamie Fernandes’s LinkedIn page, he joined Ryanair as a first officer in May this year after previously holding positions as a junior first officer and second officer.

He attened Buckinghamshire New University and Bolton[4] School, followed by pilot training at CAE in Quebec. Following the tragic news, an outpouring of condolences has flooded in from ECHO readers. Among the heartfelt messages, Veronica O Donoghue commented: “Just so so heartbreaking.

Two people gone just like that. Two families heartbroken. Thoughts and prayers go out to both families and friends, may you all find strength to get through this devastating time.

God bless you all xx.” Janet Marie Edwards Catterall expressed her condolences, saying: “Heartbreaking sleep well with the angels xxx.” Similarly, Jillian Ashcroft shared her sorrow: “So sad RIP both men.

Heartbreaking for the families xx.”
