Two Ryanair pilots killed in motorway crash while on way to airport

Two Ryanair pilots have died in a lorry crash on the M62 motorway in Cheshire while on their way to the airport, police have said.
Matt Greenhalgh, 28, and Jamie Fernandes, 24, were travelling to Liverpool John Lennon Airport in a taxi when the vehicle was involved in a collision with two lorries at around 5.31am on Thursday. The driver of the taxi suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where he remains. Cheshire Police said the driver of one of the lorries, a 61-year-old man, had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Cheshire Police said Mr Greenhalgh was a captain and Mr Fernandes a senior first officer at Irish airline Ryanair. The crash took place on the westbound carriageway between junctions seven and eight, near the town of St Helens. Both men died at the scene and their next of kin are being supported by specialist officers from Cheshire Police.
