M25 shut this weekend as drivers told only travel if necessary

Drivers have been warned to only travel if necessary as part of the M25[1] is shut this weekend. The motorway will be closed in both directions from 9pm on Friday, July 12 to 6am on Monday, July 15. It is the third time Highways England has closed the M25 as part of its junction 10 improvements works.

The motorway will be shut in Surrey[2] between junction 10 for Wisley and A3 and junction 11 for Chertsey[3] for the entire weekend. Workers will be installing a new bridge on the roundabout at junction 10. Signed diversions will be in place throughout the weekend and roads in the surrounding areas are expected to be busy while the closure is in place.

A Highways England spokesperson said: "We're grateful to all drivers who avoided previous closures and completed their journeys in other ways. We urge you to do the same again. If you do travel, expect delays[6] and please leave a lot of extra time for your journey."

Passengers flying from Heathrow or Gatwick airports have also been urged to allow extra time[7] as the closure may affect their journeys. For some drivers avoiding the closure by taking the M25 via the Dartford Crossing may also be quicker.

M25 weekend closure diversion route

Drivers travelling westbound, will be diverted off the motorway at junction 10 and onto the A3 northbound to Painshill junction, they should then join the A245 towards Woking[8], and then onto the A320 before rejoining the M25 at junction 11. For drivers travelling eastbound, between junction 11 at Chertsey and junction 10, they will need to leave the motorway at junction 11 and join the A320 south towards Woking, here they should join the A245 towards Byfleet[9] and Painshill junction, before joining the A3 southbound and then rejoining the M25 at junction 10.

The resurfacing works on the A24[10], following an oil spill on Tuesday, are expected to be finished before the M25 closure begins.
