M1 southbound delays after broken down lorry and crash cause congestion
There were severe delays on the M1 this afternoon after an HGV broke down and a crash took place, both close to one another. Two out of four lanes were closed on the M1 southbound between J30 A616 (Worksop/Sheffield South) and J29A A6192 Markham Road (Markham Vale/Bolsover). All traffic was briefly held at 4.10pm, Inrix reported.
Two vehicles were involved in the crash. Earlier the same afternoon, just before 3pm, on Monday, July 29, another incident took place on the M1 southbound between J29 Chesterfield and J28 Mansfield. An HGV broke down, causing one-hour delays and five miles of congestion.
Recovery crews were at the scene and the incident was cleared just before 4pm. The crash then occurred at around 4.10pm.

Congestion continues

All lanes reopen
The National Highways said: “All lanes are now open on the #M1[3] southbound between J30 #Sheffield[4] and J29a #MarkhamVale[5] Long delays remain in the area but this should start to ease now. Thanks for being patient.”
Traffic remains slow, however.

Two cars involved
Traffic monitoring website Inrix states that two cars have been involved in the M1 crash. It says: “Long delays and two lanes closed due to accident, two cars involved on M1 Southbound between J30 A616 (Worksop / Sheffield South) and J29A A6192 Markham Road (Markham Vale / Bolsover). “Congestion to just after J31 (Sheffield / Worksoop).
In the roadworks area. Lanes one and two (of three) are closed. At around 16:10 all traffic was briefly held.”

Another incident close by
There has been yet another crash on the M1 this afternoon, close to where the previous one has taken place. This time, the incident occured on the M1 southbound between J30 A616 (Worksop/Sheffield South) and J29A A6192 Markham Road (Markham Vale/Bolsover). Inrix states: “Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M1 Southbound between J30 A616 (Worksop / Sheffield South) and J29A A6192 Markham Road (Markham Vale / Bolsover).
Travel time is around 6 minutes. “Lanes one and two (of three) are closed. At around 16:10 all traffic was briefly held.
Traffic is also slow on the opposite side due to onlookers.”

Lanes reopen but delays still in place
In a new update, the National Highways said all lanes have been reopened, but long delays are still in place. The statement reads: “All lanes are now open on the #M1southbound[6] between J29 #Chesterfield[7] and J28 #Mansfield[8] Long delays remain but should start to ease now. “Thanks for being patient.”
