This achievement solidifies its role in leading the charge for electromobility[3].

Key Highlights:

  • BMW’s Dingolfing Plant 02.20: Over 1.5 million electric motors produced
  • Significant Investment: Over one billion euros invested since 2015
  • Workforce Growth: From 200 to 2,500 employees in e-drive production
  • Global Network Expansion: New production sites in the US, Mexico, China, and Hungary

Plant 02.20, with a history spanning over fifty years, exemplifies successful transformation. Originally BMW’s central spare parts warehouse, the site pivoted to electromobility in the early 2010s. Starting with about 200 employees, it now employs over 2,500 people dedicated to producing electric motors and high-voltage batteries.

Stefan Kasperowski, Vice President of High-Voltage Battery Production, highlights the plant’s crucial role: “We provide the BMW Group’s vehicle plants with a reliable and flexible supply of e-drive components for our electrified vehicles.” BMW’s ongoing commitment to e-mobility is evident in the extensive investments made to transform Plant 02.20 into a Competence Centre for E-Drive Production. Since 2015, BMW has poured over one billion euros into establishing around 15 production lines for battery modules, electric motors, and high-voltage batteries.

The production volume and workforce have significantly increased, reflecting the growing demand for electrified vehicles[4]. Markus Fallbohmer, Senior Vice President of Battery Production, recalls the swift transformation of the plant: “Redesigning and transforming Plant 02.20 at this record pace was certainly quite a feat.” He emphasizes the importance of high-quality e-components, economical production methods, and stable supplies to vehicle plants.

Klaus von Moltke, Senior Vice President of Engine Production, notes the plant’s contribution: “Dingolfing is the heart of the e-drive at the BMW Group. About 80 percent of all our electric motors are currently produced in Dingolfing.” High-voltage batteries produced at the site account for around 60 percent of the total.

To meet the increasing demand for electrified models, BMW has developed a global network for e-drive production. Additional production locations are set up in Leipzig, Regensburg, Spartanburg (USA), and Shenyang (China), with more to come in the US, Mexico, China, Hungary, and Lower Bavaria by 2025. As the nucleus of BMW’s electrification efforts, Plant 02.20 will continue to play a pivotal role in the future.

Comprehensive skills development for new facilities, such as the plant in Debrecen and the high-voltage battery facility in Irlbach-Strasskirchen, are underway.

The expertise from Dingolfing is expected to benefit the new electric motor production at the Steyr engine plant in Austria.

Kasperowski looks ahead: “Both the capacity of the Dingolfing location and its employees’ skills will continue to be in demand.” Fallbohmer adds: “The whole production network is now harnessing this knowledge to continue the success and bolster the growth of e-mobility at the BMW Group.”
