Cyclist killed in Edgbaston lorry crash as police make arrest

A cyclist was killed in a lorry crash today, Tuesday, July 9. Police said a man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Emergency services were called to the junction of Chad Road and Augustus Court in Edgbaston[1] at just after 10am.

A 50-year-old man was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the lorry, a man aged 28, was held and remained in police custody. In a statement, West Midlands Police[3] said: "We are investigating after a cyclist died in a collision with a lorry in Birmingham[4] this morning.

We were called to the junction of Chad Road and Augustus Court in Edgbaston[5] just after 10am. "The cyclist, a 50-year-old man, was sadly declared dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by officers.

"The driver of the lorry, a man aged 28, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody." Det Sgt Richard Evans, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said "We are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or has dash cam or other footage, to get in touch with us."
