Man dies after van collides with parked lorry on major road

A man has died after a van veered off a main road and crashed into a parked lorry. Police were called just after 4pm yesterday to the A2 in Cobham, near Gravesend[1], following the collision.

A white Mercedes Sprinter van came off the road for reasons unknown and hit one of two lorries parked on the hard shoulder. The driver of the van, a 50-year-old man died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed. His passenger, a 20-year-old man received serious injuries and was taken to a London hospital by air ambulance where he remains in a serious condition. The driver of the lorry received minor injuries.

Firefighters were sent to the scene with three fire engines attending. Crews used various cutting tools and hydraulic rescue equipment to free the casualties. Following the incident, the A2 closed between Wrotham Road, Gravesend to the M2 at Halfpence Lane, Cobham for several hours and a diversion route was implemented[2].

The route has since reopened.
