M6 traffic live: Multiple lanes closed after five-lorry smash with major disruption expected
Queues of traffic[1] are forming on the M6[2] Northbound this morning after a crash involving five lorries caused three lanes of the motorway to be closed. Motorists travelling on the stretch of the M6 near Knutsford saw their morning journey grind to a halt after the incident, which was first reported around 4.30am. Inrix road traffic sensors read: "Three lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident, five lorries involved on M6 Northbound from J18 A54 Middlewich Road (Middlewich / Holmes Chapel) to J19 A556 (Knutsford)."
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic collision involving five heavy goods vehicles on lanes 1-3 of the Northbound carriageway of the M6 between J18 and J19. Nobody is trapped however there are lane closures in place and disruption is expected in the area." An update from National Highways before 6am said: "3 lanes (of 4) lanes remain closed on the M6 north between J18 Sproston Green and J19 Tabley hill in Cheshire. "Cheshire Police Roads and Crime Unit are leading at scene.
National Highways contractors are dealing with a number of spillages. There are 20 minutes delays and 4 miles of congestion. "Recovery is on route for multiple vehicles and National Highways contractors are conducting a clean up operation.
There are 30 minute delays on approach."
