Road reopens after lorry crash causes ‘carnage’

A main road has reopened after a lorry crashed and overturned near a railway bridge leading to traffic “carnage”. The A20 Ashford Road, in Harrietsham, was shut in both directions following the incident earlier this morning (May 30).

Police officers were called just before 10am and waiting for the vehicle to be recovered. No injuries have been reported but following recovery work throughout the day, the road reopened at about 5pm.

A worker from nearby business Kent Cosmetics said it looks as though the HGV did not crash into the bridge itself but did overturn.

They added: “They appear to be trying to get it from under the bridge. I understand it has got a full load on it.” Motorists have also said the crash, combined with nearby roadworks, is causing “carnage” as they are diverted down narrow roads.

Kent Highways warned drivers to approach with caution and said there are long delays as a result of the incident.

Stagecoach South East has also said it is expecting “severe delays” to its 10X service.

A spokesperson added: “Sorry for any inconvenience.”
