Lorry crash near Sittingbourne shuts A249 towards Maidstone
Traffic built in and around Sittingbourne[1] this morning (May 9) because of a crash on the A249. The southbound carriageway, towards Maidstone[2], had been closed due to the collision. It had happened between the A2 (Key Street Roundabout) and the M2 Junction 5 (Stockbury Roundabout).
Delays soon built in the area as a result, with National Highways reporting wait times of around 30 minutes at the incident's peak. An early update from traffic monitoring service Inrix stated: "A249 southbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident from A2 Key Street (Key Street Roundabout) to M2 J5 (Sittingbourne/Stockbury Roundabout)."
A spokesperson for Kent Police said: "Kent Police was called at 9.23am on Thursday, May 9 to a collision involving a lorry and a car on the Maidstone-bound carriageway on the A249 near Danaway.
Officers attended the scene where no injuries were reported." The incident was cleared and normal travel conditions resumed at around midday.
