Chaos as overturned lorry blocks Ainley Top roundabout causing traffic nightmare

An overturned lorry is causing chaos on the roads around a busy Huddersfield[1] roundabout this morning. The crash happened on Ainley Top roundabout at about 6.30am today (Tuesday, May 21), blocking the carriageway and Halifax Road. Traffic congestion has been building on all approaches to the roundabout ever since.

A Kirklees Council[2] spokesperson said: "There has been a road traffic accident at Ainley Top roundabout this morning blocking the carriageway and Halifax Road. Emergency services are on-site and West Yorkshire Police are trying to get the left-hand lane open as soon as possible. Please avoid and use alternative routes."

As this dramatic picture shows, the lorry is on its side and appears to have shed its load.

Meanwhile, bumper to bumper traffic is blocking all exits of the roundabout. Data traffic site Inrix said: "A629 Halifax Road Northbound blocked, long delays due to overturned lorry between Yew Tree Road and A643 Lindley Moor Road (Ainley Top Roundabout). Congestion to all approaches to the roundabout and back to Edgerton.

"Following on from an earlier accident, an overturned lorry has blocked the northbound approach to the roundabout. Ongoing since around 6.30am." West Yorkshire Police has been asked for a comment.
