Road and rail services disrupted across the North East after heavy rain causes flash floods
Road and rail services were disrupted across the North East on Tuesday after heavy rain caused flash floods. On Tuesday morning, the Environment Agency had issued six flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible; and three flood warnings, meaning flooding is likely; for the region. Major roads were closed or blocked, while many rail services north of Newcastle were replaced by buses.
Tyne and Wear Metro services were also suspended for an hour and a half between Airport and Kingston Park around lunchtime due to flooding near Callerton Parkway station. Arguably the worst of the flooding was on the A189 Spine Road during this evening's rush hour. The road was closed in both directions from the Three Horse Shoes roundabout to Bedlington Interchange South.
Standing water underneath the roundabout which intersects with the A193 still trapped vehicles, and the road remains closed at the time of writing.

On the Quayside, flood barriers which had been put in place on Monday afternoon remained in place, but the river still spilled onto paths under the High Level and Swing Bridges.[2]

However, we will continue to monitor the forecast closely and may issue further alerts and warnings if necessary."
And in South Tyneside[3], there was flooding around Tyne Dock, with Commercial Road and Newcastle Road both under several inches of water. The worst of the flooding is thought to be over, with clear weather predicted for the rest of the day, according to the Met Office.

"Cloud thickening from the west as a band of rain arrives late morning with heavy outbreaks at times. Winds light initially, strengthening later."
