Hour-long M5 delays after car flips over in multi-vehicle crash

Hour-long traffic jams were reported on the M5 in Bristol after a car flipped onto its roof during a crash. The collision involved four vehicles on the motorway between junctions 18 and 19, over the Avonmouth[1] bridge, at around 5.45pm. Traffic was stopped on the road while emergency services rushed to the scene this evening (Tuesday, April 9).

One car had overturned in the crash, but Avon Fire and Rescue[2] Service confirmed no one was trapped in the vehicle. Fire crews rushed to the scene with Avon and Somerset Police and the South Western Ambulance Service. One lane remains closed on the motorway as of 7.15pm and National Highways has warned drivers of very long delays in the area.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter[3], National Highways said: “Lanes 2 and 3 are now open past the scene on the #M5[4] southbound between J18 #Avonmouth[5] and J19 #Portbury[6]. Lane 1 remains closed for recovery. There are 50 min delays above normal travel time so please allow extra journey time.”

A subsequent post at 7.42pm confirmed: “All lanes are now open on the #M5 southbound between J18 #Avonmouth and J19 #Portbury following a multi vehicle collision. Delays are clearing well. Thank you for your patience.”

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “At 17:45 on April 9, crews from Avonmouth, Southmead[7] and Patchway were called to M5 Southbound junction 18-19 to reports of a road traffic collision. The collision involved four vehicles, no persons were trapped. Crews worked with police and ambulance on the scene.”
