Courts round-up: 15 people in south Essex sentenced

David Knight, 41, of Dalys Road, Rochford, stole from the Sainsbury’s Local store in West Street three times in January and once in March, taking food and alcohol worth a total GBP133.80.
He admitted the offences at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on March 30 and was handed 12 weeks imprisonment, suspended for six months. Knight was also banned from the store for six months and ordered to pay costs of GBP85. A man who destroyed a woman’s phone has been ordered to pay more than GBP1,000.
Osvaldo Simao, of Marine Parade, Leigh, damaged the woman’s mobile phone in Nottingham on March 24 last year. The 32-year-old admitted the offence at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday. He has now been ordered to pay compensation of GBP1,449 and a fine of GBP140.
Simao must also pay prosecution costs of GBP85 as well as a GBP56 surcharge to fund victim services. A motorist caught driving near Festival Leisure[2] Park while banned from the roads has been handed a fine. Justyn Poppitt was caught behind the wheel of a Citroen Berlingo in Festival Way, Basildon, while he was banned from driving on December 21, 2022.
Poppitt, of Market Hill, Boroughbridge, was also found driving without insurance that same day and failed to surrender to court bail at Southend[3] Magistrates’ Court on April 3 last year. He admitted the offences at Leeds District Magistrates’ Court last Monday. The 52-year-old must now pay a fine of GBP120, prosecution costs of GBP85 and a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP48.
A drink driver caught almost double the legal limit has been banned from the roads for half a year. Abba Elliot, of Pembury Road, Westcliff, was found behind the wheel in Upminster Road, Hornchurch, when he had 64 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on January 5. The legal limit is 35.
The 44-year-old admitted the offence at Romford Magistrates’ Court and was banned from driving for six months and fined GBP400 last Thursday. He must pay prosecution costs of GBP200 and a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP160. A driver has been banned from the roads for almost two months after going through the fence of a factory and “causing thousands of pounds worth of damage”.
Iftiqir Chowdhury, of Dovervelt Road, Canvey, was driving an Audi R8 on Factory Road in Newham when he lost control before mounting the pavement and going through the metal fencing causing damage to the property and car, Stratford Magistrates’ Court heard. The 26-year-old admitted driving without due care and attention at the court on March 25 and has been banned from driving for 56 days. He was also fined GBP461 and ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP184 and costs of GBP110.
A drive caught speeding on a main road has been fined more than GBP200. Arnold De L’or Djaffa Ndouho, of Rowenhall, Laindon, has been hit with the large penalty after he was caught going above the 70 mph limit on the A1 in North Yorkshire. The offence, committed on May 29 last year, was proved in the Volkswagen Golf[4] driver’s absence at Harrogate Justice Centre on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old has now been handed a fine of GBP220 and a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP88. He must also pay prosecution costs of GBP90. Ndouho’s driving record has been endorsed with three penalty points.
A man caught with cocaine on a main road has been jailed after he failed to surrender to court bail. Maheb Rashid, of Steeplehall, Pitsea, was on the A27 in Brighton when he was found with a quantity of the class A drug in his possession on November 24. Having been released on bail, the 22-year-old failed to surrender to custody at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on March 28.
Rashid admitted both offences at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday. He has now been jailed for three months and ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP154. A speeding driver caught travelling 17mph above the limit on a motorway has been banned from the roads.
Laurence Harvey, of Surbiton Road, Southchurch, was driving on the M4 in Almondsbury when he was found going at 67mph on July 8. The limit in this stretch is 50mph. The 54-year-old admitted the offence via the single justice procedure and was banned from driving for six months at Bath Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday.
Harvey has also been handed a fine of GBP750 and ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP300, as well as costs of GBP110. A woman convicted of fraud after an incident in Southend has been handed a new suspended sentence order after offending again. Kelly Cross, 38, was given the original suspended sentence order earlier this year after she was convicted of committing fraud by false representation.
Cross, of Green Lane, St Albans, admitted breaching the suspended sentence order at Hatfield Magistrates’ Court and was given a new order of 14 weeks suspended for 18 months. If she offends again she may be ordered to serve the prison sentence. A speeding driver caught six miles per hour above the limit on the A13 has been hit with a fine.
Felix Aluebhosele, of Parklands, Billericay, was driving a Mercedes C class on the major road in Poplar when he was recorded going at 36 miles per hour on July 21. The speed limit in that stretch is 30. The 61-year-old admitted the offence at Stratford Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.
He has now been ordered to pay a fine of GBP72 and a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP28. His driving record was also endorsed with three penalty points. A fare dodger caught without a GBP5.70 train ticket has been handed a large fine.
Nathaniel Mbu, of North Avenue, Southend, had been found travelling between Rayleigh and Prittlewell stations on September 5 when he had not previously paid the fare and intended not to, St Albans Magistrates’ Court heard. The 28-year-old was found guilty March 27. He has now been handed a fine of GBP220 and ordered to pay compensation of GBP5.70.
Mbu must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP88 and prosecution costs of GBP175. A man who did not hand evidence over to police relating to a driver alleged to have been guilty of an offence has been fined. Jack Connor, of Bridge Street, Noak Bridge, failed to give information to chief officer of Avon and Somerset Police relating to the driver on December 8, Bath Magistrates’ Court heard.
The offence was proved via the single justice procedure on March 20. The 49-year-old has now been fined GBP660, ordered to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP264 and prosecution costs of GBP90. His driving record was also endorsed with six penalty points.
A fare dodger caught travelling without a train ticket has been fined over GBP200. Sarah Hodges, of York Road, Southend, was found on the Greater Anglia train between Rayleigh and Prittlewell stations when she had not previously paid the GBP5.70 fare on September 4. The 37-year-old was found guilty at St Albans Magistrates’ Court March 27, handed a fine of GBP220 and ordered to pay compensation of GBP5.70.
Hodges must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP88 and costs of GBP175. A driver caught on the roads without a licence or insurance has been handed a six-month ban. David Hill, of Bartlow End, Basildon, was driving with a revoked or refused provisional licence in Berwick Way in Wainscott when he was not displaying L plates and was not supervised.
His Ford Focus was also not insured when he was caught on May 20 last year. The 51-year-old admitted the offences via the single justice procedure and was banned from driving for six months at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on March 27. He has also been fined GBP300, ordered pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP120 and costs of GBP90.
A driver caught using her phone behind the wheel has been hit with a fine and points. Harley Burness-Crouch, of Foksville Road, Canvey, was driving a Smart Forfour in West Carriage Drive near Hyde Park when she was caught using her mobile phone on December 17, 2022. There was also no insurance in force covering her car.
The 32-year-old admitted both offences at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court on Monday, March 25. She has now been handed a fine of GBP120 as well as prosecution costs of GBP48. Burness-Crouch must also pay a surcharge to fund victim services of GBP85.
Her driving record was endorsed with eight points.
