Emergency services, including both police and an air ambulance, rushed to the westbound carriageway of the motorway near Royal Wotton Bassett, shortly before noon on Saturday, March 9. Police say a vehicle left the road and collided with a tree, causing injuries to four people. The extent of these injuries has not been confirmed.

Officers shut the westbound carriageway between junctions 15, at Swindon, and 16, at Royal Wootton Bassett and traffic was held in the area.[1] Swindon Advertiser: Traffic on the M4 after the incidentTraffic on the M4 after the incident (Image: National Highways) At the time of writing, the road remained closed while emergency services worked to resolve the incident.

This has caused long delays with traffic queuing on the westbound approach to junction 15. There had also been congestion on the eastbound carriageway, caused by roadworks, but this has now eased. A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "We were called at 11.50am this morning to a report of a collision on the M4 westbound between junctions 15 and 16.

"One vehicle left the carriageway and collided with a tree.

"Four people have been injured and the westbound carriageway has been closed while the incident is dealt with."
