Police dog Hully chases ‘dangerous’ suspected van thief, aged just 16, up M60 embankment
A police dog captured a boy of 16 after the youth had abandoned a stolen van which had been driven the wrong way down a motorway and hid in a kids’ playpark.
The canine, named Hully, spang into action moments after traffic cops became suspicious about a Peugot Expert van as it was being driven through Gorton[1] at 2.19am today (Monday).
The van sped away from Mount Road in Gorton, prompting a pursuit. It drove east along Hyde[2] Road, followed by the traffic officers, before the van turned into oncoming traffic on the M60[3], according to Greater Manchester Police[4].

Before the next junction, the driver abandoned the van and ran up the motorway embankment towards the Brinnington estate near Stockport[6].
It was then that GMP mobilised it’s ‘Tactical Dog Unit’, with Hully being released to chase the suspect. The dog tracked up the motorway embankment, across fields and into the Brinnington estate where the suspect was found hiding in children’s play area.
Hully cornered the suspect in Moat Walk Park in Brinnington. After a few barks, the youth surrendered to Hully’s owner and so he didn’t need to bite the teen in order to stop him, a force spokesman confirmed.
The suspect still had the keys to the van on him, according to GMP.
A boy, aged 16, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop and taking without owner’s consent and remains in police custody for questioning, according to a spokesperson for the force.

Earlier this month Police Dog Hully helped to capture four suspected car thieves on the Merseybank estate in south Manchester.[7]
Following his latest ‘arrest’, Sergeant Paul Holt from Greater Manchester Police’s Tactical Dog Unit said: “This job was another great example of the cross-collaboration between several departments in GMP’s Specialist Operations.
“PD Hully and I turned out to this incident knowing that we had to find the suspect after showing total disregard for other people’s safety by travelling down the motorway in the wrong direction.
“On this occasion, I am happy to report that no one was injured during this incident, and we are delighted that we can get another dangerous driver off the roads in Greater Manchester.”
