Police car smashes into metal barrier and flips over on M62 with two officers in hospital

Two police officers are in hospital after a patrol car flipped over onto its side on the M62[1] on Tuesday afternoon (January 2).

Emergency services were called to the motorway, near J5 (Roby Road), at around 3pm following reports that a police car had crashed. The vehicle was later discovered on its side on a grass embankment.

Merseyside Police confirmed the car hit a metal barrier and that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Two police officers were in the car, but were able to release themselves before Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene.

The force has confirmed the police officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries as a precaution as they appeal for witnesses to come forward, the ECHO reports.[3]

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that emergency services attended a road collision involving a police vehicle on M62 westbound, near junction five today, Tuesday 2 January 2024. Just before 3pm it was reported that a police car had collided with a barrier. No other vehicles were involved.

"Two officers sustained slight injuries and were taken to hospital as a precaution. A road closure was in place at junction five while the incident was being dealt with and it has now reopened.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision or captured anything on CCTV or dashcam is asked to contact police via @MerPolCC on Twitter[4] (X) or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook, quoting log number 536 of 2 January 2024."
