M5 flatbed driver slapped with fine after spilling pea shingle on carriageway
A flatbed lorry driver has been fined after causing a pea shingle spillage on the M5. Avon and Somerset Police’s Roads Policing Unit (RPU) has been policing the motorway recently, with one driver carrying a load that was 1.5 tonnes overweight.
In addition to spillages and disobeying weight limits, the RPU[1] discovered that some drivers were risking driving uninsured and unlicensed. As a result of the law being enforced, West Country drivers have been slapped with fines, seizures and prohibitions.
The lack of care taken by HGV drivers came as the region was battered by the strong winds[2] and heavy rain that came with Storm Henk. Driving conditions have been less than ideal this week, with many roads completely inaccessible due to flooding and one man killed when a tree fell on his vehicle in Gloucestershire.
On X, formerly Twitter[5], the RPU wrote today: “Vehicle dropping pea shingle onto M5, insecure curtain siders and people risking driving uninsured and unlicensed. Fines, seizures and prohibitions. Great to chat with Commercial drivers many of which willing to listen and learn. Great attitudes by most.”
The RPU then added that the flatbed vehicle dropping pea shingle onto the M5 was 1.5 tonnes overweight. “£300 fine issued plus more for dangerous load,” officers added.
