Live: Helicopter scrambled as suspects abandon car on A50 in police chase

A helicopter has been scrambled a police search for suspects who abandoned their car on the A50 before fleeing on foot. Police were involved in a pursuit on the dual carriageway this evening (January 3) when the driver stopped and the occupants abandoned the car near Blythe Bridge.

Residents say a helicopter is now circling the area around Draycott-in-the-Moors and Tean. Staffordshire Police Roads Policing Unit is working with Central Motorway Policing Group to trace the suspects who they believe were ‘intent on committing crime in Staffordshire’.

The incident led to the A50 being shut on the eastbound side for a short time but it has since reopened.

Sharing details on X, formerly Twitter, Staffordshire Police Roads Policing Unit said: “Currently working with @CMPG[1] just off the A50 near Blythe Bridge following a short pursuit with a car.

“Occupants believed to be intent on committing Crime in #Staffordshire[2]. Abandoned car on the carriageway and ran off. East bound closed for a short time. Reopened but slow moving.”
