Sharing the picture on X, formerly known as Twitter[3], police warned of the dangers of riding on major roads.
The cyclist was stopped, removed from the road[4] and charged by officers following the incident.
They wrote: “Glasgow road police spotted this cyclist on the M8 earlier today.
“For the avoidance of doubt cyclists and pedestrians are not allowed on a motorway.
“It poses a massive danger to all road users and we robustly deal with any we catch.
“Cyclist now faces day in court[5] having to explain himself.”
It is against the law to cycle on a motorway and new rules introduced to the highway code last year meaning those who are caught risk hefty fines.
Cyclists are prohibited from riding in a “dangerous, careless or inconsiderate manner”.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1998, dangerous cycling comes with a maximum fine of £2,500, with commuters facing a £1,000 fine for careless pedalling.
Earlier this year, a brazen cyclist was captured riding along the eastbound carriageway near Blochairn Junction in Glasgow.
Police were alerted by a member of the public but were unable to trace the man.
He was cycling in a live lane adjacent to the slip road with cars passing on either side of him.[6]
