A man was cut free from the car and taken to Salford Royal Hospital for treatment where he remains in “critical condition”.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirmed several fire crews were deployed to assist with the incident.

A spokesperson said: “Three fire engines from Whitehill, Stockport and Ashton fire stations, as well as the technical response unit from Ashton, quickly attended the incident.

“The collision involved one car which was on its roof upon crews’ arrival.

“Firefighters extricated a man from the car, who was then taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service.”

Fire crews were in attendance for around 40 minutes but the M60 remains closed anti-clockwise between junctions 24 (Denton) and 27 (Stockport).

Police have also said the force is appealing for information about the crash.

Greater Manchester Police said: “A car collided with another vehicle on the M60 motorway at around 5.41am, which resulted in the vehicle overturning.

“The driver of the overturned vehicle is in a critical condition and has been taken to Salford Royal Hospital for treatment.

“Junction 24 to 25 anticlockwise remains closed and drivers are urged to avoid this area.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage is being encouraged to contact the force by calling 0161 856 4745, quoting incident number 662 of 30/12/2023.

Alternatively, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The North West Motorway Police Group are still on the scene to carry out its investigations and will later begin to recover and clear up the area.
