M4 closure live as Prince of Wales Bridge is shut in both directions due to police incident

A serious police incident has caused the emergency closure of the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge this evening, Saturday, December 30. National Highways has said the motorway bridge was closed between Magor and Pilning as of around 8.45pm.

Motorists have been advised to use the M48 Severn Bridge as an alternative while the M4 is closed. According to traffic monitoring service Inrix, some restrictions are in place at the M48 bridge due to high wind speeds, but the bridge is currently open. The nature of the incident is not clear at this stage.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Highways wrote: " #M4[1] #PrinceofWalesBridge[2] J23 #Magor[3] and J22 #Pilning[4] closed in both directions for an ongoing incident. We will advise when it is back open. Please use the M48 as a diversion."
