M1 multi-vehicle crash led to standstill traffic and long delays during rush-hour

There was heavy traffic on the M1 in Derbyshire[1] this evening (Monday, December 18) due to a multi-vehicle collision earlier on today. The section of the motorway affected was the southbound side between Junction 30 at Balborough and Junction 29a at Duckmanton[2].

The news was originally confirmed by National Highways East Midlands at around 3.30pm on Monday. The statement from National Highways said: "Traffic has been stopped on the M1 southbound in Derbyshire between junction 30 at Barlborough and junction 29a at Duckmanton.

"This is due to a multi-vehicle collision, one of which has come to rest on its roof. All emergency services are in attendance."

Traffic was allowed through via one lane by 4.10pm but the other three lanes remained closed until just before 5pm, when only one lane was still shut. This remained closed until just after 5.30pm when all lanes were reopened. But it left many surrounding roads congested into the evening.

It is not known if there were any serious injuries as a result of the collision.
