Christmas day horror crash on M60 as driver falls asleep at wheel after 12-hour shift

A driver who dozed off on their way home after working a 12 hour shift crashed their car but walked away from the wreckage after a “Christmas[1] miracle.”

Police shared shocking pictures of the utterly ruined car near Ashton-under-Lyne, which came off the M60 motorway at around 6am. The driver was rushed to hospital and was lucky to escape serious injury. Officers said the driver was tired after working all night and then crashed. The road was all clear by 10am after they had to close one lane to pick up the broken car.

The North West Motorway Police shared: “This is the aftermath of an RTC at 6AM this morning on the M60 near junction 23, driver just finished a 12 hour shift and fell asleep at the wheel, thankfully not serious injuries but likely to remain in hospital today. Please take a break if feeling tired.”

One shocked person called it a “Christmas miracle” the person survived, while another replied: “My wife used to work 12hr shifts in A&E and Major Trauma, always uses to worry about her driving home in the morning. Employers really need to be more mindful of how their staff get home post shift.”

Another added: “That looks horrendous, good news wasn’t more serious hope they’re ok. Wish we did something to discourage these kind of shifts.” Another said: “Thanks to you all on the Blue Line or under blue lights who are working today to keep us safe. Pleased this didn’t end as badly as it could have. Stay safe.”

Another said: “One poor decision is all it takes. Nobody wants the knock on their door or the dreadful call. Glad they’re not seriously injured. Everyone has to be mindful that when driving in an unsuitable state not only do you pose a risk to yourself but others as well. Stay safe”
