Upgrade to major M5 motorway link road delayed

After Somerset Council declared a financial emergency[1] in early-November, all major capital projects – including major road improvement schemes – are being reviewed to ensure value for money.
A council spokesman said: “These are major and complex works that will ensure the road remains usable for years to come, but will take some time to complete.
“Given inflation pressures, we need to consider how the scheme can be delivered in the most cost- effective and environmentally friendly way.
“Critically, we must also avoid any clash with other local and national works, and are in discussions with National Highways to identify a suitable schedule.”
Since the funding was originally awarded, new major developments have been approved nearby, including the creation of a new business park and associated wetlands and the approval of a new KFC drive-thru.
