  • A man, aged 34, from Manchester was arrested by police and remains in custody

Several marked and unmarked police cars were seen surrounding the vehicle and crashing into it yesterday on the M6.

At one point, a marked cop car is seen bashing into the black BMW convertible, causing it to spin out.

Another police officer in an unmarked black vehicle stopped in front of traffic, which was trailing slowly behind the encounter.

He opens his car door and runs towards the scene, where other cops are frantically jumping over vehicles in order to get to the suspect.

The driver had initially attempted to drive the wrong way down the carriageway, Cheshire Police told Manchester Evening News. [2]

A 34-year-old man from Manchester was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for officers, using a cloned number plate, dangerous driving, drunk driving and two counts of drug driving.

The black BMW was stopped at around 3:30pm near Stretton and fled police onto the M56 and then the M6.

The police were able to stop the vehicle near junction 20 at Lymm.

Chris Gibney, 32, captured the video which appears to show the moment police surrounded the car.

He said: ‘We [my driver and I] weren’t aware of what was going on. We thought there was an incident further ahead.

‘One of the police cars almost hit my van but thankfully we were crawling along at the time.’

Mr Gibney reported seeing three or four officers removing a man from the vehicle.

He said that the man was taken into the silver unmarked car in the footage and that there was a dog handler present.

‘He was taken into the silver car, there was a dog handler on the scene too, they put him in the silver car and sped off.

‘I’ve seen this kind of thing on TV, but you never think it will happen to you.’

After the incident, Mr Gibney said that there was a short cleanup operation and the outside lane was reopened to traffic.

Inspector Anton Sullivan, of the Cheshire police Roads and Crime Unit, told MEN: ‘The individual involved was driving erratically and initially attempted to drive in the wrong direction on one of the busiest motorways in Cheshire during rush hour traffic.

‘The danger posed to other innocent motorists was unthinkable and had to be stopped before he got onto Thelwall Viaduct, but thanks to the great work of the team we were able to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.’

The man remains in custody.
