Fuel tanker driver technician fuels passion for policing through volunteering

Fuel Tanker Driver Technician Marcin Wojcik is fuelling his passion for policing by volunteering hundreds of hours of his free time as a Special Constable for West Midlands Police.

During the day, Marcin meticulously inspects heavy goods vehicles and transports fuel to the Petrol Stations for HOYER Gas and Petroleum Logistics. But when he’s off the clock, he shifts gears and roles to support our roads policing team.

Marcin joined the Specials in 2017, where he served on Response and attended emergency calls.  He now volunteers his spare time to support our Force Traffic Unit at Central Motorway Policing Group (CMPG).

Whether he’s actively patrolling our streets, responding to critical road traffic incidents, or using ANPR to disrupt organised crime gangs, Marcin is always on the move. He dedicates his free time to making our region’s roads safer.

Marcin’s childhood growing up in a deprived Polish neighbourhood, where the police were often viewed with fear, inspired his journey to become a Special. He was determined to change that narrative, build trust, and represent his community.

He said: “I have always been interested in the investigative side of police work, in piecing together clues and evidence. Joining the police felt like a natural path for me.

“Joining the Specials presents fantastic opportunities to make a positive impact in numerous ways. Volunteering is not only rewarding, but there’s a special joy in witnessing a simple smile from someone you’ve helped.”

Special Constables have the same powers as regular police officers, wear the same uniform and equipment, and perform the same role on a voluntary basis.

Marcin reflects on a memorable moment during his Specials duties: “I was involved in a high speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle on the M6 that unfortunately ended in a serious road traffic collision.

“As we approached the scene, I noticed the stolen vehicle had left the motorway, colliding with an articulated lorry. Without hesitation, I ran to the scene and extinguished the flames engulfing the stolen vehicle.

“I noticed the driver was trapped, so I climbed into the passenger’s seat, attempting to release the driver’s legs. However, the seat was broken so I remained with the driver and offered reassurance until the ambulance arrived. I believe my actions that day helped prevent further injuries and a potentially catastrophic situation for many motorists on the road.”

Our Specials come from all walks of life and get involved in all kinds of police work. They use their existing skills to help keep communities safe.

Being a Special Constable is a great opportunity for you to do something special in your spare time. If you already have a career that you love, but have always wanted to become a police officer, then this role is perfect for you as you can volunteer around your work and family life.
