End date of ongoing M62 Ouse Bridge works is delayed again
The date for completion of all repairs to the M62 Ouse Bridge has been pushed back again.
National Highways issued an update on repairs at the motorway bridge today (Friday, November 24). The works were ordered after a joint failure was discovered in March 2022 and a contraflow traffic[1] system and temporary speed limit have been in place ever since.
Originally, National Highways said the work would be finished in autumn 2023 but this was pushed back to spring 2024. But now it has said the final stage of the project is not expected to finish until “the end of summer 2024”, almost two-and-a-half years after the fault was discovered.
In its update on the M62[2] Ouse Bridge, National Highways said: “We have had a busy summer on site. We are continuing to use hydro demolition to remove damaged concrete and prepare for the new joints in the hard shoulder and lane 1.
“We have already started to pour the new concrete section ready to install the new joints with these section looking to be complete early in the new year. As work has progressed we have been able to develop the programme and will be replacing all eight joints on the bridge as part of this scheme.
“This will reduce the need to return to site in the near future to carry out further work.” National Highways has provided a new timeline for the remaining phases of work but asked motorists to “please be mindful that these dates may be subject to change should we encounter adverse weather or any unexpected delays”.
New key stages completion dates:
- Eastbound hard shoulder and lane one work to be complete by mid-January 2024
- Traffic moved to allow work on Lane 2 and 3 eastbound January 2024
- Lane 2 and 3 eastbound to be complete by the end of February 2024
- Traffic moved to allow work on Lane 3 east and westbound, end of February 2024
- All work completed on the eastbound carriageway by mid-May 2024
- Mid-May, work to switch to westbound carriageway and to be complete by end of Summer 2024
